I did the Tundra brake upgrade on my 3rd-gen Runner, with the 3.4 (and a 5-speed). I routinely tow about 2,000 pounds with it for 20-50 miles, without trailer brakes. Stops need to be planned. Expect low top speeds and double or triple your stopping distance. I wouldn't tow a heavy car with it. If you've got a Geo Metro or old M3, sure.
